Alloy steel is a workhorse of industry because of its economical cost, wide availability, ease of processing, and good mechanical properties.

Alloy steels are generally more responsive to heat and mechanical treatments than carbon steels. The heat-treated type is available in both annealed and normalized.

There are many different types of applications and uses for this type of metal. Alloy Steel has alloying elements added to it such as manganese and nickel, which improves its strength, hardness and toughness, making it ideal for highly-demanding industrial projects. Due to the varying combination of properties of each shape and grade of alloy steel, the exact use case, however, can vary.

Alloy steel 4130 (chromoly) is a chromium molybdenum alloy steel known for its weldability, ease of fabrication and mild harden ability. It is vacuum degassed to meet the magnetic particle inspection standards of AMS 2301.

Alloy steel 4140 is a oil-hardening, chromium-molybdenum steel with good strength and wear resistance, excellent toughness and ductility, with the ability to resist stress and creep at prolonged high temperatures (up to 1000°F [538°C]).

Alloy steel 4340 has a high fatigue/tensile ratio and maintains strength, ductility and toughness at relatively high temperatures. For an alloy steel, it has relatively excellent non-distorting properties.
